Hi, I’m Dan Portnoy
I write about power and consequence.
Monsters, machines, and myth - the stories where getting what you want costs you something real.
I spent twenty years telling other people's stories. I’ve produced audiobooks for best-selling authors, like Steven Pressfield. Raised millions of dollars for nonprofit organizations using the power of story. I've directed, produced, and fixed stories for brands and organizations across the country. That work taught me how stories actually move people - not in theory, in receipts.
Now I'm telling mine. A creature mythology pilot. A cyberpunk thriller. A group of Varangians stranded in feudal Japan. A YA novel about the monsters that crossed the ocean with us. The work lives here.
I also run Portnoy Media, a creative strategy company for mission-driven organizations. That's a different site for a different job.
I live in Southern California with my wife and three kids. One of them marches drum corps, which means I know more about contrabass bugles than any screenwriter should.
If you make things, start with the essays. If you want the stories, they're waiting.
