This was my first official year with the crew at Moustache May.com These guys are nothing short of amazing. Super creative it had me laughing for hours through the month. What really struck me funny was how much effort daily put into these incredible pictures.
Last year I joined the moustached crew late into the month and the effects that my stache had on social situations were pretty funny. So when this year came around I didn’t think it would be that big a deal.. but I was wrong.
Here’s some excerpts from my journal to give you more of a inside look at the process of the month
Day 4 - Face feels dirty. Do I really want to do this?
Day 16 - It seems that in every social situation I feel the need to apologize for my stache. Every event I’ve been to in the last 2 weeks didn’t feature a stache attached to anyone younger than 45.
Day 19 - I got asked out today, (by a woman) could the stache have magical properties? Am I channeling Tom Selleck?
Day 23 - Can’t have a conversation without mentioning my mustache. It’s influencing my behavior. When I see other guys with mustaches there’s instant camaraderie and usually the head nod greeting. What’s with that?
These gentlemen banded together to show America that they weren’t afraid of the old caterpillar lip. Thanks guys for a great month and I’ll see you next year. Or.. do I go for no shave November (Go Whiskerino!)
But for now… we’re back to “normal”

Today is the day that I’ve been waiting for, for 6 months. The story of the 300 Spartans fighting insurmountable odds as recorded by Herodotus (the father of written history). I think this story captures a rare quality found or even a value that is rarely emphasized - sacrifice. If you’re not familiar with the story, Greece was in danger of being run over by a million man army of Persians. Their political climate had each city state living in isolationism form the others and when the giant threat came to Greece, the leaders knew that they had to adjust if they wanted a chance to survive and not become slaves of King Xerxes. Because Leonidas gave his word to fight, he essentially sealed the fate of he and his men. Fight they would and in what would result in the most incredible 3 days of fighting, the Spartan warriors trounced the Persians.
Betrayal found the mighty Spartans on the third day and they were flanked by a large group of Perisans who were led over a mountain pass by a Greek shepherd boy to attack them from the rear. “Never get involved in a 2 fronted war” is what I’ve always been told and that’s what the Spartans found themselves in.
The sacrifice of these men for their families, for their country inspired a nation to fight against the invading Persians but also to trounce them so bad that they never again ventured into Europe.
So many men will today be inspired by sacrifice - what inspires you?
