Dan Stache

This has been a crazy past few weeks.. and I don’t mean crazy busy, I mean insane. Upon a dare from my younger brother I grew a mustache out this month, along with him. (I believe his actual words were, “You can’t do it, you woman!”) So, of course I had to.

The beginning of the growth meant I had a choice of what I wanted to do, or what type of look I wanted to have. With the mustache enjoying new popularity.. the decision was tough. So I decided on the “Tombstache” or what I dubbed the mustaches enjoyed by Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell in Tombstone. To have the look of a rogue and leave the presupposition of the scary guy cruising chat rooms and ending up on Dateline.

Tombstache

Over the course of the past few weeks an odd thing was happening, initially I was apologetic to people about my “Trained Caterpiller” but after a time it wasn’t that important to me. There were a few brushed with Danger though, when recently seeing X3 at the midnight showing at my local Movieplex - I was fitting in too well with the rest of the Nerd Herd, lucky for me I didn’t go it alone. The other was on Memorial Day, I visited Best Buy to check the sales. I was just doing swhat I normally do… bring in my reward zone free money coupons and see if there is anything I’d be interested in buying.

When I first got in I grabbed the circular and made my way around and then the first find - Superman II on DVD for 8 bucks, SWEET! I walked around a little more and then the DVD for Black Sheep 4 bucks, wow this is great. Then it hits me. I’m buying old comic book and stoner movies walking around the media section of Best Buy whilst wearing a mustache… oh man, abort, ABORT! I quickly paid in what had to have been one of the most awkward cashing out exchanges I’ve ever had.

But overall, the experience wasinteresting to wear a mustache for a little less than a month. It’s definitely a gut check every morning when the face in the mirror asks, “Are you really leaving the house like that?” I would encourage anyone (as long as your a guy) to grow your mustache and watch the world change.

And I’ve got the picture to prove it… Jeremy Cowart (who is ridiculously talented by the way) took some pics for the upcoming album artwork to the latest opus from Matt Wertz.

I need our help on this… With the summer being officially welcomed all around this country ver the weekend. I’ve been thinking about some new math.

1 Burger + 1 Hot Dog = 3 Hot Dogs

2 Burgers = 3 Hot Dogs

2 Burgers + 1 Hot Dog = Heartburn

When Bratwurst are on the grill = All bets are off

Fruit on grill = Daring

Upon entering the theatre for my long awaited viewing of X3, I was surrounded by so many others who were thrilled to see the third installment in the Xmen saga. Right off the bat, my concerns were of too many characters and not nearly enough time and there’s no way Hollywood’s green lighting a superhero epic.

So much talk centered around Halle Berry pushing for more screen time and then the studio cow towing to that. Which is sad because it’s politics as usual even in regards to great stories that have survived on a month to month basis for years.

With the Start of the movie and the back story on Jean Gray, the special effects to make patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan Younger were great.. so subtle but perfect. i thought the movie did a great job with regards to Jean Gray and the beloved Phoenix. Tweaking some of the major points of a form of schizophrenia vs an alien was a bit of a betrayal but they did stay true to the characters essence, unhinged, unsure and misguided.

I think the whole world wanted more Wolverine. The first films were great for showing off some talent but we wanted more. Logan in the woods taking out scouts and perimeter defenses was a great bit… although if I geek out here.. he’s a former CIA agent/NSA operative/ninja… I’d think it’d be more stealthy.

For best scenes in the film, when the team revisits Jeans house and absolute chaos ensues, it’s fantastic. Anytime Phoenix “shows up” the effects are great… they just don’t do enough with her in the last scene, she has to have a psychotic break before she gets involved.

The fantastic surprise of the film in found in Ellen Pages portrayal of Kitty Pride. She was incredible! as I watched the screen it was easy to envision the very same thing in the pages of a comic book…

Where story line is concerned I think they could get away from the “the mutant phenomenon” and how it fits into the modern day world. We (the american and world population) are all on board with comic books being made into films, I’d just like more of a leap into that universe.

Overall… X3 is easily worth the cash for the theatre experience and of course I can live with the adjustments but my preference would be to get Brian Singer back on board and ditch Storm, provided there’s another one.
